Hong Kong & Singapore 101: What You Actually Need to Know

Two cities, one trip, and two genuinely different experiences. Here’s the true rundown before you book.

🧠 True Insight (Must Know)

1. South Africans travel visa-free to both cities. 30 days visa-free entry to Hong Kong and 30 days to Singapore, no visa admin needed for a 7-night trip like this one. Singapore does require a Digital Arrival Card completed online within 3 days of arrival though, don’t skip that step.
2. Two different currencies. Hong Kong Dollar and Singapore Dollar aren’t interchangeable, so budget for changing money (or drawing cash) twice, not once.
3. November means two different climates on one trip. Hong Kong is dry, sunny, and mild in November, genuinely one of its best months. Singapore is hot, humid, and rainy, it’s the start of the northeast monsoon season there. Pack for both.

🌍 True Experience (Must Do)

1. Ride the Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong, especially at dusk when the skyline lights up. Cheap, iconic, and better than most paid harbour tours.
2. Walk through Gardens by the Bay in Singapore after dark, when the Supertrees light up. It’s one of those things photos don’t quite capture.
3. Eat at a street market in each city. Hong Kong’s night markets and Singapore’s hawker centres are completely different experiences, both worth doing properly.

🎒 True Essentials (Must Have)

1. A compact umbrella or light raincoat, mainly for Singapore. Hong Kong likely won’t need it, Singapore almost certainly will.
2. Comfortable walking shoes. Both cities are best explored on foot, and Hong Kong has more hills and stairs than it looks like on a map.
3. One universal power adapter. South African plugs don’t fit either city, but Hong Kong and Singapore both use the same plug type, so one adapter covers the whole trip.
